Advocacy & Representation
The recognised collective voice of New Zealand's SMEs to government, regulators and councils.
We are the voice of New Zealand's small and medium businesses. SMEs make up around 97% of Kiwi enterprises, yet the smallest operators are too often the least heard. NZSME represents our members' interests to central government, local councils and decision-makers — making sure the day-to-day realities of running a small business are part of the conversation on the issues that shape it.
Our advocacy is non-partisan and evidence-led: we don't align with any political party, we align with the interests of small businesses. By bringing members' collective experience to the table, we work to influence the settings that decide whether a small business can start, survive and grow — from tax and compliance to payment practices, access to finance and the cost of doing business.
This includes:
• Representing members in central and local government consultations and submissions
• Championing the small-business perspective in national and regional forums and in the media
• Engaging with councils on the local issues that affect members — rates, regulation and economic development
• Raising the concerns members tell us matter most: rising costs, late payment, compliance burden and access to finance
• Giving members a collective voice that carries further than any single business could alone
Early priority: establishing NZSME as a credible, recognised voice for SMEs with government and councils.
